Rights on Wheels

The world speed skating championship is now rolling in Cali. Colombia sees its best sportsmen and women winning medals like a world power in this sport. At first glimpse the event doesn’t seem to have much to do with the rights of children and adolescents. But, as often happens in many other social, economic and political activities, a closer look will turn up some surprises.

V-DAY and UNICEF Call for an End to Rape and Sexual Torture against Women and Girls in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo
New York, NY - August 6, 2007: Highlighting the issue of violence against women and girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), renowned playwright Eve Ensler has chronicled her first-hand encounters with women in eastern DRC, where sexual violence has become a routine weapon of war. LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Based on what you know about the country’s situation, what would you propose doing to consolidate these priorities?

30 thousand public-school students visit Divercity and receive education kits

Bogotá D.C. August 31, 2007. Last August 28, within the framework of the alliance created by UNICEF, Eduparques and the District Secretariat of Education, pedagogical visits to Divercity were begun as part of the strategy to raise awareness of children’s rights in Bogotá schools. Beginning this week and until February 2008, 30 thousand primary school students from 54 public education institutions will make the programmed visit.

UNICEF to provide attention for flood victims in the department of Córdoba

Bogotá D.C., August 30, 2007. More than 27 thousand persons affected by the rainy season in the department of Córdoba will benefit directly and indirectly from the intervention to be implemented by UNICEF, in partnership with Oxfam and the Colombian Red Cross. Five thousand child victims will benefit directly from this intervention in the rural areas of the municipalities of Lorica, San Bernardo del Viento, Purísima and Momil.

REGION UNITES FOR “INVISIBLE” CHILDREN
