My first appointment with a communications media director when I got to Colombia as UNICEF Representative, was with El Tiempo’s (then) co-director, Rafael Santos. He was wrapping up a planning meeting with Enrique Santos, the other co-director, and Roberto Pombo, general editor of the newspaper.

GENEVA, 18 December 2009 - Five years after an earthquake off the coast of Indonesia triggered a massive tsunami that spread throughout the Indian Ocean, UNICEF issued a report summarizing the results of its relief and recovery programmes in the eight affected countries.
 
GLOBAL MEASLES DEATHS DROP BY 78%, BUT RESURGENCE LIKELY
Over 400 deaths a day is still too many - stalled momentum puts millions more children at risk
ATLANTA/GENEVA/NEW YORK/WASHINGTON – The Measles Initiative announced today that measles deaths worldwide fell by 78% between 2000 and 2008, from an estimated 733 000 in 2000 to 164 000 in 2008. However, global immunization experts warn of a resurgence in measles deaths if vaccination efforts are not sustained.
