NEW YORK / GENEVA, 29 JUNE 2007 – UNICEF today condemned continuing attacks on schoolchildren and educational facilities in conflict zones around the world. "Attacks on schoolchildren are unacceptable,” said UNICEF Executive Director Ann M. Veneman. “Schools must be safe environments for children to learn and thrive.”
Cauca Indigenous Youth trained to overcome the consequences of violence
Bogotá D.C., 11 July 2007. UNICEF is preparing to implement the second phase of the project to strengthen the Alvaro Ulcué Youth Movement, one of the strategies being implemented in the Department of Cauca to prevent the involvement of children, adolescents and youths in the illegal armed groups. It is estimated that 644 children, adolescents and youths and 600 families will benefit from this project.

On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Convinced that in the implementation of the functions of different entities there has been an opportunity to see the impact they are having on the lives of the city’s children and adolescents, the District Secretariat of Social Integration, the ICBF, UNICEF and the Attorney General’s Office invited various civil society actors to a dialogue: economic groups, trade unions, non-governmental organizations, and professional associations.
