UNICEF Chief commemorates
Breastfeeding Week by promoting better nutrition
and child health in Nigeria
KEBBI STATE, NIGERIA, 31 July 2009 - UNICEF Executive
Director Ann M. Veneman emphasized the contribution
that breastfeeding can make to improving children’s
nutrition, health and development, speaking in
Nigeria today at the start of World Breastfeeding
Week (1-7 August).

UNICEF implementing
Mine Risk Education strategies
In August the Colombian Campaign Against Mines
(CCCM), under an agreement with UNICEF, will begin
the third phase of the Mine Risk Education in
Education Communities project, being implemented
in 17 of the country’s municipalities since
2007 – specifically in rural areas where
there is a high risk of anti personnel mine and
unexploded ordnance accidents.

United Nations Special
Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Indigenous Peoples
ends visit to Colombia
27 July 2009. Bogotá, Colombia –
“The situation of the human rights of indigenous
peoples in Colombia is serious, critical and deeply
disturbing”. That was the conclusion of
the former Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights
and Fundamental Liberties of Indigenous Peoples,
Professor Rodolfo Stavenhagen in his report on
Colombia in 2004. “That evaluation continues
to apply today, despite several important initiatives
by the Government of Colombia in recent years”,
says the current Special Rapporteur, Professor
James Anaya, at the conclusion of his visit to
the country.

UNICEF and the Organization
of Ibero-American States sign education accord
Panama, 17 July 2009 - Nils Kastberg, UNICEF Regional
Director for Latin America and the Caribbean and
Álvaro Marchesi, Secretary General of the
OIS (Organization of Ibero-American States) have
signed a memorandum of understanding to promote
educative attention for children in Ibero-America,
especially in the context of the current world
economic crisis.

MONT BLANC supports
education projects
in partnership with UNICEF
Bogotá, July 17, 2009. As part of the Alliance
established between Mont Blanc and UNICEF at the
global level, these two entities’ Colombia
offices are to begin coordinated work aimed at
strengthening education projects being implemented
in the country.

Donations
through bank’s automatic tellers reach $930
million With donations
from BBVA customers, UNICEF supports education
for 8,000 Colombian children
Donations from BBVA customers through this financial
entity’s nation-wide electronic teller network,
have been able to provide 930 million pesos for
UNICEF programmes in Colombia. With these funds,
8,000 children in the zones affected by the last
rainy season have been able to return to their
schooling, which was interrupted by damage to
schools from avalanches, mudslides and floods
in more than five departments.

Ethnic groups and
rural population in Corinto participate in education
projects
CINDE and UNICEF, with support from the Corinto
Municipal Mayor’s Office and Indigenous
Council, are promoting the formation of youths
and adults from different ethnic groups and the
rural population, through a non-degree university
course called “Formulation, Management,
Execution and Evaluation of Social Development
Projects”, involving local indigenous,
Afro-descendant and mestizo communities.

ARE SAFE AND PROTECTIVE OF THEIR RIGHTS
BOGOTÁ, SCENE OF MAYORS’ SUMMIT
Tomorrow, July 14, Bogotá will be the scenario
of the Ist National Meeting on the Participation
of Children and Adolescents in the Construction
of Safe Cities that Guarantee Their Rights. Around
500 children, mayors of Colombia’s capital
cities, Bogotá authorities, the country
and international organizations working for children
will participate in the event.

2009 REPORT
Geneva, Julio 6 de 2009 – Progress on Development
Goals in Latin America and the Caribbean faces
risk of reversal as impact of global economic
turmoil hits. Latin America and the Caribbean
remain on track to reach some of the Millennium
Development Goal (MDG) targets by the 2015 deadline,
but the ongoing global economic and financial
crisis threatens to derail the progress the region
has made so far, according to a UN progress report.
