“Feed their lives, nourish their dreams”
Bucaramanga, 2 June 2009. With the “Clean Hands” project, aimed at offering ideas and dynamic activities for school restaurants and generating opportunities for education to encourage good habits for hygiene, health, feeding and healthy coexistence, young leaders from Tumaco (Nariño) are working on strategies to contribute to mitigating the country’s malnutrition and avoiding students’ dropping out of school. Tatiana Valencia is one of the promoters of this initiative.

Occupation of UNICEF Somalia base hinders vital interventions
NEW YORK, USA, 24 June 2009 – The Somali militia group Al Shabaab is still occupying the UNICEF base in Jowhar town, nearly six weeks after taking it over on 17 May. Jowhar is UNICEF’s main hub for the southern and central regions of Somalia.

Cauca public accountability in Maternal-Child Health

With support from UNICEF and the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, the Cauca Secretariat of Health held the Departmental Public Accountability Forum in the SENA auditorium in the city of Popayán, to transmit tools for strengthening rights to improve the early childhood health and nutrition situation of early childhood.

Chocó taking action to improve Mother-Child Health

Chocó’s Secretariat of Health, with support from UNICEF and the Fundación Santa Fe de Bogotá, held the Departmental Forum on Public Accountability in the auditorium of the Universidad Tecnológica del Chocó in the city of Quibdó, to report on the mother-and-child health situation in the department.

A WINDOW OF PEACE FOR NARIÑO

Bogotá, D.C., 17 June 2009. Five United Nations System agencies and programmes (UNHCR, FAO, UNDP, UNICEF and UNIFEM), the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID), the National Government (through the Presidential Agency for Social Action and International Cooperation) and the Office of the Governor of Nariño have launched a joint programme for eight Nariño municipalities, to accompany and strengthen their local institutions and the efforts of the communities experiencing situations of vulnerability and marginality, especially indigenous and Afro-descendant populations.

The National Committee for the Eradication of Child Labour and Protection of Young Workers, comprising State entities, labour organizations, NGOs and private enterprise, are convening all citizens to learn about the progress made in the fight against the worst forms of child labour, and to assume greater social responsibility for reducing and eradicating them and protecting the work of young persons.

Bogotá, 5 June 2009. At the conclusion of the VIII Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youths, the country learned the results of the efforts and commitments of departmental authorities and governmental entities in favour of guaranteeing and promoting the rights of children and adolescents and a balanced diet, and of having Food and Nutritional Security.

“The Right to Balanced and Adequate Diet” is the title of the keynote address to be presented by international expert Frederico Campos Guanais De Aguiar this Wednesday, June 3. This keynote presentation will be part of the opening session of the VIII Meeting of Governors for Children, Adolescents and Youth, Facts and Rights, which will take place at the Centro de Ferias in Bucaramanga (Santander), and whose central theme will be the food and nutritional security of children, adolescents and youths in the current global crisis.
