and partners appeal for funding to aid
families in Myanmar’s cyclone

| NEW
YORK, USA, 8 May 2008 – To meet
the urgent needs of children and families
affected by the cyclone last weekend
in Myanmar, UNICEF today issued an emergency
appeal for $8.2 million. The initial
funding request is part of an interagency
appeal prepared with the organization's
UN partners. |

| On August 17 the Bill
of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in
which the law on Children and Adolescents
is promulgated”, a proposal that
prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition,
Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health,
Special Protection, Civil Registration,
Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality,
and Water and Sanitation. Based on what

GOVERNORS’
COMMITMENT:
ERADICATE THE COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION OF
CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
Bogotá 30 May 2008. In order to prevent
and eradicate the sexual exploitation of children
in Colombia, the country’s 32 departmental
governors will present strategies for a timely
national and local intervention in the problem
at the Sixth Meeting of Governors for Children,
Adolescents and Youth.

supplies to aid in quake recovery

China, 15 May 2008 – Two days after the
largest earthquake to hit China in a generation,
the Chinese Government yesterday formally requested
the support of the international community to
respond to the needs of affected families.

PROTECTING CHILDREN
AGAINST COMMERCIAL SEXUAL EXPLOITATION –
A PRIORITY
Bogotá,
May 2008 – With the aim of preventing child
sexual exploitation and reducing risk factors,
last May 8 the National Plan of Action for the
Prevention and Eradication of the Commercial Sexual
Exploitation of Children and Adolescents was launched.
The Plan seeks to learn the characteristics and
dimensions of the commercial sexual exploitation
of children, make it visible, and generate strategies
for intervening at the national, departmental
and local levels.

UNICEF crisis response
focuses on water and hygiene in aftermath of Cyclone
Nargis
NEW
YORK, 7 May 2008 – With 5,000 square km
underwater and an estimated 1 million people homeless
and in need of assistance, Myanmar continues to
reel from the effects of Cyclone Nargis, which
struck last weekend. In its response to the crisis,
UNICEF is focusing on providing safe water and
hygiene supplies to children and families at risk
of life-threatening water-bourne diseases.
