Young people the most heavily affected
In Colombia, a new case of HIV/AIDS is reported among young men and women every day. This figure contrasts with the ones reported 20 years ago, when a new case was detected every week. As in many countries, the HIV/AIDS epidemic affects the most vulnerable populations and increasingly affects young people.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the People’s Ombudsman’s Office reports that there currently are no concrete data on the number of children and adolescents involved in illegal armed groups in Colombia.
A child-friendly school for the children of Buenaventura
Bogotá D.C., November 20/06. At least 1200 children and adolescents in Buenaventura were benefited thanks to the termination of the final part of the Pablo Emilio Carvajal Educative Institution, in Alejandro Cabal Pombo barrio.
 
Camps swell as women and children flee fighting in south Darfur
NEW YORK, USA, 16 November 2006 – Thousands of women and children have taken shelter at a camp in south Darfur after a sudden surge in fighting forced them to flee their homes. An estimated 11,000 people arrived at the Ottash Camp near Nyala in October alone.



LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. Life-saving cards and gifts arrive in Colombia

Bogotá, November 28, 2006. UNICEF has brought its new collection of Cards and Gifts to Colombia, to contribute to the well being of Colombian children. This year, the resources raised through the sale of these products will be used to strengthen the programmes for prevention of anti personnel mine accidents throughout the country, especially important since mines have been planted in 31 of Colombia’s 32 departments.

III Governors’ Meeting ends with a positive balance for children

Santiago de Calí, November 14 de 2006. With the participation of 28 governors, the III Governors’ Meeting for Children and Adolescents was held in the city of Cali. For two days, these regional authorities, along with national and private agencies, worked in six discussion groups that produced a series of propositions for the 8 priority themes for children on which the National Development Plan 2006-2012 aims to have an impact.

More than 10 thousand young persons have benefited during Phase II of “El Golombiao – The Game of Peace”

Bogotá, November 22. At least 10 thousand young people from different parts of the country have benefited from the implementation of Phase II of “El Golombiao – the game of peace”, a project led by the President’s Colombia Joven (“Young Colombia”) programme, with support from UNICEF, IOM and the GTZ.
