My first appointment with a communications media director when I got to Colombia as UNICEF Representative, was with El Tiempo’s (then) co-director, Rafael Santos. He was wrapping up a planning meeting with Enrique Santos, the other co-director, and Roberto Pombo, general editor of the newspaper.

UN Report: Data shows progress needed on HIV testing and treatment for children and mothers

NEW YORK/GENEVA/ BARCELONA 30 November 2009 – National efforts to combat AIDS, particularly by preventing mother-to-child transmission, are showing positive results, but many HIV and AIDS affected children still struggle to have their basic needs met, according to a report launched today by four United Nations agencies.

The District Institute of Tourism, Fundación Renacer/ ECPAT/Colombia, and UNICEF – united against the commercial sexual exploitation of children and adolescents, associated with travel and tourism in Bogotá

November 23, 2009. One of the negative risks of tourism in any destination in the world is the use of its infrastructure and particular conditions for actions related to the Commercial Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents (CSECA) by national and foreign tourists or travellers. In Colombia, since July of this year, Laws 1329 and 1336 severely punish the use of children and adolescents for sexual exploitation linked to tourism with penal sanctions and the definitive closing of establishments used for these ends.

Bogotá, November 20, 2009. Around 4,000 Colombians have said “yes” to a date with our children, in the RUN 4 THEM UNICEF10K athletic competition to be held this Sunday, November 22, in Bogotá, to raise funds for the maternal breastfeeding and early childhood projects being operated by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Colombia.

Bogotá, November 17/09. The countdown is underway for the athletic competition RUN 4 THEM UNICEF 10K , an event to be held this November 22 in Bogotá. Now, five days before the race, there already are 3,000 participants who, with their inscription fees, are supporting maternal breastfeeding and early childhood projects being implemented by the United Nations Children’s Fund in the country.

Actors and Television announcers unite to RUN 4 THEM


Bogotá, November 9, 2009. Personalities from the music entertainment world like UNICEF Good Will Family Carlos Vives and Claudia Elena Vásquez, and from national television like Jorge Enrique Abello, María Cecilia Botero and Marcela Carvajal, and others, have already confirmed their participation in the RUN 4 THEM UNICEF 10K race, a sports event to benefit Colombian children, to be held next November 22 in Bogotá. The event is being held to raise funds to strengthen maternal breastfeeding and early childhood programmes.

Three weeks away from the important date for Colombian children, there now are 1,965 participants signed up for the CORRE POR ELLOS UNICEF 10K (“RUN 4 THEM,UNICEF 10K”) footrace to be held next Sunday, November 22 at 10 AM in Bogotá. This sports event is being held to raise funds to strengthen maternal breastfeeding and early childhood programmes that UNICEF – the United Nations Children’s Fund – is operating in Colombia.

WHO/UNICEF launch new action plan against pneumonia, the leading killer of children

NEW YORK, 1 November 2009 – More than five million children could be saved over six years if a comprehensive plan to tackle pneumonia is adopted worldwide, according to UNICEF and the World Health Organization (WHO). The comprehensive plan, called the Global Action Plan for Prevention and Control of Pneumonia (GAPP) is being jointly launched by the two agencies at the Global Pneumonia Summit in New York City on Monday.
