¿What is corporate social responsibility?

Although the concept and practice of corporate social responsibility is becoming consolidated in Colombia and the circle of socially responsible businesses is growing, there still are those who defend the idea that companies are socially responsible when they meet their legal obligations or when they perform acts of charity and make donations to social causes.
   
UNICEF Announces International Children’s Day of Broadcasting Award Nominees
NEW YORK, 21 September 2007 – UNICEF today announced the nominees for the International Children’s Day of Broadcasting (ICDB) Award, co-presented yearly by UNICEF and The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. The seven nominees for the 2007 ICDB Award won their respective regional competitions.
UNICEF and the Office of the Governor of Antioquia
advance in public policy for the prevention of involvement of children and adolescents in illegal armed groups
Next November 26, with the expedition of a Departmental decree, the Office of the Governor of Antioquia will formally launch a public policy for attention and protection of children and adolescents affected by the armed conflict. That same day, the Departmental Working Group will present the recently elected Mayor of Medellín and Governor of Antioquia with the Departmental Plan of Action for the Prevention of Involvement in Illegal Armed Groups.

LAW ON CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS
On August 17 the Bill of Statutory Law was presented to Congress “in which the law on Children and Adolescents is promulgated”, a proposal that prioritizes eight basic themes: Nutrition, Education, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Special Protection, Civil Registration, Maternal Mortality, Infant Mortality, and Water and Sanitation. With a reduction in infant mortality indicators, Colombia is in line with the world tendencies revealed today by UNICEF, according to which the deaths of children have declined favorabley, with the current figure standing at 9.7 million, compared to the almost 13 million there were in 1990.

Surveys reveal solid progress on child survival
Child deaths fall below 10 million for first time


New York, 13 September 2007 - New figures show solid progress on child survival, including a decline in the annual number of under-five deaths, according to UNICEF. Global child deaths have reached a record low, falling below 10 million per year to 9.7 million, down from almost 13 million in 1990.

UNICEF manifests its concern for children and the effects of one of the worst hurricane seasons in the last 100 years

Panamá and Nueva York, 4 de September 2007 – A few hours before Hurricane Félix’ lashing of the northern Atlantic coasts of Nicaragua and Honduras, different organizations are mobilizing to provide support for a vulnerable population, most of whose housing – according to previous evaluations – had no chance of resisting the force of a category 5 hurricane. The hurricane season is just beginning, and this is the first time since 1886 that two hurricanes of this kind have hit the countries of the Atlantic Caribbean in less than a month.
